Donor spotlight: WYATT EDWARDS

Wyatt Edwards received an early birthday present this year. His parents, Rebecca Bednarz and Steve Edwards, surprised the teen with a donation to the 1000 Homes Campaign in his honor.

Wyatt, who turns 15 this summer, said he was only “a bit” surprised by the gesture. His parents shared the gift with him when he went to get the mail and noticed a lawn sign in front of their home. When driving around town, he says he looks for the signs now and cheers on fellow library supporters.

Since moving to Westford, he has been a big fan of the J.V. Fletcher Library. He enjoys spending a lot of time there and finds it a comfortable, creative community space. In particular, Wyatt enjoys serving on the Young Adult Advisory Board (YAAB), a group that advocates for the interests of teenage library users, and attending teen programs. He had a special connection with former Young Adult Librarian Jess Dyment.

Wyatt recalls with fondness Dyment’s response when he shared a list with her of suggested titles to celebrate Disability Pride Month, which takes place in July. He hoped to share books representing kids and teens with disabilities in fiction and nonfiction. Dyment found many of the titles in the collection and ordered others, including Save Me a Seat by Gita Varadarajan and Sarah Weeks (a book that Wyatt says changed his life) and Where You See Yourself by Claire Forrest, and she put some on display. He says, “I love the library because it is a place for all people. I always feel welcome and hope others do too. I like to contribute to this feeling of community on the YAAB however I can.”

An avid reader from a very young age, Wyatt also enjoys traditional Irish dancing, swimming, singing a cappella, and playing the piano. He recently completed middle school at Oak Meadow School and the counselor-in-training program at Audubon’s Drumlin Farm, and he looks forward to 9th grade this fall. He’s leaving open the possibility of someday becoming a librarian

The Foundation thanks Wyatt and his family for their generous donation!
