Donor spotlight: The Greenwoods
Darryl and Ann Greenwood believe libraries are critical to the health of our society. “There is no substitute for having a local, free library,” Darryl said. “It’s part of the fabric of our country.”
The Greenwoods decided to donate to the library renovation project to help ensure the institution continues. “We want to make sure the library will be there in the future,” Darryl said. “Not everything can exist online.” Ann agreed. “There’s nothing like being able to open a book,” she said.
Ann recalled spending time at the library with her two oldest grandchildren when they were small. She said the first thing the children would ask to do when they came to her house was visit the library. “I think we checked out every kids’ book in the place,” Ann said. The children also enjoyed borrowing DVDs and attending special events. Darryl said their granddaughter, now a sophomore in college, is a voracious reader and a talented writer.

The couple are very thoughtful about the organizations they support. “We are at a point in our lives where we want to give back,” Darryl said. “We can’t do everything, so we choose institutions that are important to us and to the community.” They prefer to keep their donations local. In addition to libraries, they direct their contributions to healthcare establishments.
The Greenwoods have lived in Westford for 49 years. Ann works as an administrator at Westford Suzuki School. Darryl is a retired electrical engineer who worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. These days, he enjoys building boats and furniture, as well as gardening. “We also exercise a lot,” he said, “and we travel when we can.” When they are getting ready to plan a trip, they head straight to the travel section of the library.
The Foundation thanks the Greenwoods for their generous donation.
