Donor spotlight: Jenny and Marc

Jenny Baran and Marc Chan are excited about the upcoming building renovation.

The couple, who have lived in Westford for three years, are regulars at the J.V. Fletcher Library. “It’s one of the first places we felt a sense of community after we moved here,” Marc said.  “It’s great to have a space where we recognize people, and where we are recognized.”

After attending one of the Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library’s book sales – the first indoor sale post-pandemic –  the two were inspired to volunteer their time. “I love sorting books!” Jenny said. “It’s very satisfying!” In addition to sorting and restocking during the sales, the couple often help with set up and take down. They also hang up the book sale advertising posters around town.

Their fondness for libraries began early on. Marc, 26, developed an appreciation when he was deployed overseas with the military. He found the base library was a great resource for English-language materials; he particularly enjoyed reading about the tech industry. Jenny, 27, remembers going to the library every Saturday with their dad when they were growing up. “We’d fill a giant tote with books,” they said.

As an adult, Jenny has carried on the tradition of utilizing the library. They often borrow eBooks. “If I had to buy all those books, it would cost an enormous amount of money,” said Jenny, who once created a spreadsheet to track how much they would have spent.

Their love of libraries and their enthusiasm for the upcoming renovation motivated Marc and Jenny to make a donation to the 1,000 Homes Campaign. “Libraries are a very American institution,” Marc said. “We should keep them going whenever we can.” He added, “We don’t have kids, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be a part of the community. It’s easy to sit on your heels and keep your time and money for yourself. But why not contribute?”

Jenny is a software engineer at IBM, and Marc is an operations supervisor for SIMCO Electronics Boston, where he manages day to day operations for a commercial calibration lab.

The Friends and the Foundation appreciate their support!
